How to Change Your Major

How to change your intended major once you have made a 'major' selection

If you have carefully investigated your options, completed the Five Steps to a Major Decision, and decided upon a new major, it is imperative that you meet with an academic advisor to discuss the specific prerequisites and other admission criteria required for admittance into the new program.

As you make the transition from one major to another, you need to remember to do the following:

If you were previously approved as a major in another department

• You must notify your previous major department that you no longer wish to pursue the program and that you would like to be dropped from the major. Note: if you were dismissed from the major, this will be done for you.
• Once your former department has changed your status, you need to update your new declared major on MyUB. Use the Web Registration link and select Update My Declared Major.
• If you have difficulty having your former major dropped, visit 232 Capen where the Student Response Center staff will remove your former Approved Major. Do not skip this step as it is very important that your former major department be notified.
• Upon successful completion of the admission (to department) criteria for your new major, obtain an updated copy of your DARS report through MyUB and bring this DARS to your department to apply. Remember that while some departments have rolling admission, others have specific application deadline dates.

If you were not previously approved as a major in a department

• Once you have decided upon a new major, log on to MyUB and update your new declared major by using the Web Registration link and selecting Update My Declared Major.
• Upon successful completion of the admission criteria for your new major, obtain an updated copy of your DARS report through MyUB and bring this DARS to your department to apply. Remember that while some departments have rolling admission, others have specific application deadline dates.
