Honors

Honors status and recognition come in various forms at UB. Some honors opportunities are provided via special programs like the University Honors College and Advanced Honors Program. This type of honors experience has a curricular component which spans the full breadth of the institution and specific performance standards to remain in the program and graduate with a notation of "honors scholar".

Other academic honors options are more narrowly focused, such as departmental honors programs. These programs are specific to a major and may include special seminars and a research/thesis component. These are great opportunities which will challenge you to work much harder, but the return is significant. You will have the opportunity to create a unique honors experience based on your academic interests, work one-on-one with faculty, and significantly advance your knowledge through a thesis/research project.

Honor societies also offer significant recognition of both your abilities and your hard work. UB's chapters recognize accomplishment inside and outside of the classroom and at all levels (freshman through senior year). Many are by invitation only. If you are invited, you should definitely respond and learn more. Membership can provide you with leadership opportunities, new friends, new academic experiences, honors to list on your resume for employment or graduate/professional studies and access to faculty mentors who can provide letters of recommendation. Some even offer scholarships for graduate study.

Dean's List, Latin honors, and Departmental Honors also provide recognition of outstanding academic accomplishment - high grade point averages (and, in the case of departmental awards, may include additional academic accomplishments).
