Critical Academic Reminders

Posted September 29, 2006 in General, Important Dates, Academic & Other Workshops

Be Accountable . . .
Do you have a checkstop on your account? A checkstop is used by a UB office to “freeze” a student’s records and prevent future enrollment activity until the student has met the requirements for its removal. Financial checkstops particularly serve the additional purpose of prohibiting other University services such as the receipt of a diploma, certification services, or transcript release until the student has satisfied the financial obligation.

#2 Checkstop
Attention New Students: If you have logged onto MyUB and noticed that you have a #2 checkstop on your account be reminded that SUNY has mandated all UB students to acknowledge receipt of and affirm the University’s standards for behavior. If you have failed to do so, the #2 checkstop prevents you from being able to register for spring 2007 courses. Be sure that you go on-line now and affirm UB’s Rules and Regulations! You need only your UBit name and password and the #2 checkstop will be removed immediately. Affirm today!

A (Advising) Checkstop
All students should begin meeting with their academic advisor to plan a schedule for the spring 2007 semester. If you are a first semester freshman, your MANDATORY ADVISING appointment must be made with Student Advising Services by Friday, October 27, 2006 in order to avoid an A (Advising) checkstop on your account. Call us today at 645-6013 and be sure you can register on time!

Be Reminded . . .
All new freshman are required to participate in AlcoholEDU. AlcoholEDU is a three-hour, on-line science-based course that has two sections (3 parts), which must be completed to fulfill the requirement. Part I of the course should have been completed by the end of August 2006. The deadline to finish Parts II and III must be completed by Monday, October 23, 2006. For additional information or questions about the AlcoholEDU requirement contact UB’s Wellness Education Services, 114 Student Union, North Campus, 716-645-2837.

Searching For Information: Part 1: Picturing Your World

Posted September 6, 2006 in General, Study Tips, Exploring Majors & Careers

Are you taking World Civilization (UGC 11 or UGC 112) this semester? If so then you are probably learning about places that you have never visited before. Your textbook may provide some illustrations, but do you need more current images to help you visualize what you are learning?

If so, let us present a search strategy that involves using tags (keywords) with a photo website called Flickr. Using Flickr users can upload their photos for viewing over the web. Flickr encourages users to add tags (keywords) to their pictures as a way of remembering, organizing and sorting their images. The use of tags also allows other users to view all publicy saved images of that keyword. To illustrate this concept, let’s use the upcoming visit of his holiness the Dalai Lama to the University at Buffalo later this month. Use this link to see details of his visit. In preparation for the visit, new students were given a copy of Freedom in Exile: The Autobiography Of The Dalai Lama, this year’s inclusion in the UB Reads Program.

This lead me to want to see more of Tibet. Using Flickr, I knew that if I entered keywords (tags), my search would yield images taken by people who live or have visited the area. Based upon a review of the book, I started my search using these keywords (tags): dalai lama; Lhasa; Potala; Tibet, and Himalayas. I entered these words into the search feature in Flickr, and below are some shots that have helped build a broader image of Tibet. Notice that many images will also include descriptions by the photographer and comments by other viewers.

Keyword (tag): Potola http://www.flickr.com/photos/rctravel/61711535/in/set-1333258/

Keyword (Lhasa): http://www.flickr.com/photos/kennymathieson/139450578/

Your turn! Use this link to enter keywords or tags (Popular Tags: http://flickr.com/photos/tags/ ) or this link to use a new tool FlickrMap (http://flickr.com/map). Is this making you want to study abroad (UB Study Abroad Office)?
