Beginning Semester Tips

Posted January 9, 2006 in General

Do you need to make adjustments to your spring schedule based upon your fall grades? If you did not perform well in your fall semester courses, be sure that you make any necessary adjustments to your spring semester schedule before classes begin. A good rule of thumb is if you received a grade of C- or lower particularly in a sequential course such as chemistry 101 or calculus I, chances are you will not be ready to successfully continue on with the second course in the sequence. Talk with an academic advisor today to assist you with your schedule. If you are undecided about a major, remember to consult with Student Advising Services. If you have an intended or approved major, utilize the Advising Locations directory for your appropriate advising unit.

Are you comfortable with your amount of registered credit hours?
Students complete about 15 credits a semester. To be considered a full-time student, students need to be registered for at least 12 credits a semester. To be making Academic Progress at UB, full-time students need to complete a minimum of 24 UB credit hours an academic year.

If you plan to work, organize your job to work for you.
It is recommended that you limit yourself to no more than 15 hours of work per week as a full-time student in order to ensure that you are not taking needed time away from studying.

Have you sent all of your AP credits, alternative credits, and any college transfer coursework to UB?

Remember to ALWAYS print out an updated copy of your class schedule.
If you make any changes to your spring semester schedule, you need to always check that such changes have been recorded correctly and that you have printed out an updated copy of your schedule through MyUB. When logging on to MyUB, remember to click on the “Web Registration” link and the “View Schedule” button to view a current copy of your schedule.

Go to class!
Do not underestimate the importance of attending class. The first day of class particularly is the most important time for you to receive the syllabus, learn about the course content, meet your instructor, and learn if you have the necessary preparation essential to be successful in the course.

Plan appropriate travel time.
Plan at least 1 hour of travel time between a North and South campus class. If you have a class in the Ellicott Complex followed by a class on the North Campus spine, you need to plan at least 30 minutes of travel time.

Still looking for another spring semester class?
Be sure you search the Undergraduate Catalog for courses that may interest you. Have you considered:

1) GSE 155 - Methods of Inquiry (3 credits)
2) UBE 102 - Dynamics of Leadership (2 credits)
3) UBE 110 - Introduction to Peer Education (2 credits)
4) UBE 202 - Career Planning (3 credits)
